    Brașov Community Foundation

Efforts to create a community foundation in Brașov began to take shape in 2014, when several initiative groups in Brașov responded to the call by the Association for Community Relations to set up new community foundations. After several months of becoming acquainted with one another, it was concluded that it would be best for two of the groups to unite. The next step was to design a plan to raise half of the funds needed to set up the foundation.
The first project of the initiative group, “Brașov Heroes, the obstacle race of the community”, raised 45,000 lei, followed by the program “8 hours’ overtime for a good cause”, about which the mentor of the project says it is the best way to find out what you can do under pressure and learn good practice from professionals.
These events continued in 2015 and at the end of June the initiative group managed to raise all the necessary funds for the establishment of the 13th community foundation in Romania.
The team set out to become a community aggregator, and in 2016 it focused on activities that create contexts for the people, their ideas, and their proposals.
“The need to know the grassroots community we want to grow with, has led us to the development of fundraising mechanisms and also to the backing of more community projects”, declared the Foundation team, who have managed to raise 229,270 lei by the end of the year.
In 2016, in addition to the 21 projects supported financially, Brașov CF was involved in advising and supporting projects from different areas, such as social, cultural and educational.
For two of these projects, they worked closely with Benchmark Electronics Romania, which contributed to the endowment of the County Center for Excellence in Brașov and the construction of a sports field in the yard of Middle School No. 5 in Gârcini, a neighborhood accommodating the largest Roma community in Europe.
Together with another partner, Siemens Corporate Technology Romania, the Foundation supported the donating process of more than 110 pieces of office furniture to local organizations. Thus, 18 local associations and foundations have refurbished their offices with the furniture donated by the partner.
In 2016, Brașov Heroes continued to mobilize the community at the foot of Mount Tâmpa and in the third edition there were over 750 runners and 950 donors who raised 100,388 lei for the 15 registered projects.
The heroes of Brașov were both experienced and amateur runners; more 140 children participated in the race, and the novelty of the event was the participation in the family race of a 2 year-old dog named Sara, who ran alongside her owners and wore the number 947. After the finish line, she received a well-deserved medal.
The following year, a surprise came from a former beneficiary of the Braşov School of Education for Inclusive Education. Once, years ago, he himself was helped in recovery by the center's specialists, and in 2017 he ran for this cause, to give back some of the good that has been done to him and to ensure that other people like him will know the joy of recovery.

“We, at Brașov Community Foundation, create contexts where people with a lot of energy, creativity, knowledge, time and money to offer, come together to tackle the various challenges of our city. Each of them, with the resources they bring to the table, contributes to a possible solution”, stated Mihaela Andrieș, executive director of the Brașov Community Foundation, at the beginning of 2017.
FC Brasov joined the group of foundations that organizes the Științescu Fund, and in 2017 organized the first edition. With a budget of 100,000 lei, the program managed to fund ten projects that were attended by nearly 1,500 children and teenagers in Brasov.
"The pilot edition of Stiinteescu Fund meant 10 teams that mobilized students, parents, teachers and people passionate about STEM, who jointly developed projects that explored the fascinating world of science: interdisciplinary math laboratories, robotics programs, workshops and trade fairs sciences, racing cars and meteorological phenomena”, says the Foundation's team.
